Joining Regional Wines & Spirits in 1996 as a wine advisor. Raymond is one of this country’s most knowledgeable wine lovers having developed a passion for all wines in the 1970s while in the hospitality industry in Dunedin. Coming to Wellington in 1989, Raymond has worked for Wilson Neill, Liquorland, O’Reilly’s, Glengarry Hancocks, and for Regional Wines & Spirits where he has found his home.
Raymond is very much an integral part of the New Zealand wine scene, having served at all the major New Zealand wine judging competitions such as the Air N.Z. Wine Awards, Royal Easter Show Wine Awards, Bragato Wine Awards, the Liquorland ‘Top 100’, the N.Z. International Wine Show, and the International Chardonnay Challenge since 1988, and is a regular senior judge and panel leader at these wine shows. He is also a multi New Zealand Wine Options champion having participated in these competitions since the mid 1980s.
Fascination in all facets of wine have taken Raymond to practical winemaking with vintage experience at Benfield & Delamare and Te Mata Estate. Wine and food judging for the Corbans Wine & Food Challenges plus several terms as Wine Master at the Beefsteak and Burgundy Club of Tinakori have given valuable experience in cuisine matching. Recent challenges have included the total logistics role in event management as Wine Director for the 2001 and 2004 Pinot Noir conference industry showcases and consultant for the Pinot Noir 2007 event
Currently, wine education and wine enjoyment is Raymond’s focus. Raymond has a very broad expertise in the wines of the world as well an intimate knowledge of the New Zealand wine scene. Fine wines such as Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Mosel Rieslings and Amontillado Sherries are avidly followed along with great value Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Barossa Grenache and Argentine Malbec.. His interest in Single Malt Whisky and Craft Beer is continuing to grow.
A Certificate in Wine tutor since 1984, Raymond sees wine education paramount in healthy, moderate enjoyment and consumption of all alcoholic beverages. Overseeing Regional Wine & Spirits tasting programme continues that service. His contribution to Regional Wines and Spirits newsletters and website is also a part of the education role that Raymond sees as significant in New Zealand’s growing maturity in the wine, beer and spirit world.
