Stephen Clarke

Stephen is our on-premise sales rep and though relatively young in years, Stephen has around a decade of experience in the hospitality trade. Barely out of school, Stephen left Wellington to wash dishes at the well-known Governors Café in Dunedin, famous for the bottomless $1.00 cup of coffee! From there he came back home to work at the busy Chocolate Fish, literally ‘running food’ and learning to make real coffee, followed by a stint of restaurant and bar service at the Chameleon at the Hotel Intercontinental and Traffic where ‘Bar Art’ and cocktail sense made sense! Three years at Coyote in Wellington (and Dunedin) has given Stephen an appreciation of the ‘nitty-gritty’ of hospitality and a love of the night-life. The ‘good-life’ was seen at the iconic Logan-Brown, where Stephen experienced his wine epiphany – a taste of 1985 Chateau Le Pin from Pomerol! The last two years has seen Stephen as the Maitre d’ at St Johns Heineken Hotel, where service, ordering and training has been his responsibility.

Stephen joins Regional Wines with the keen (almost ‘geeky’ –Ed.) desire to learn more about wine, while maintaining his love for the hospitality scene. He loves the complete experience of a night out, wining and dining with his partner Michelle, starting with a Coopers Sparkling Ale or a fresh 2008 25 Steps Central Otago Pinot Noir Rosé moving through to exploring his current passion for Spanish reds, and finishing with an Ardbeg single malt or a classy Cognac.

As a former representative level water polo and in-line hockey player (as well as international referee in this sport), we know Stephen has great determination and is an achiever. We look forward to his growing enthusiasm with wine and know that Stephen will love sharing his passion for wine and food with his clients in the coming future.

I'm off to the bach for New Year. Outlook is wet but after the weather we had for Christmas I'm sure the gardens need it.
