This year the annual Gisborne Gold Beer Options was a hotly
contested competition with a mere 2 points dividing the .first placed team from
the second place and a three way tie for third. This year presenters Geoff Griggs and Kieran
Haslett-Moore put together a fantastic range of beers with some challenging
questions to sort the wheat from the chaff. Reigning champions for the last two
years ‘White Rino’ were this year left without their champion striker Kieran
Haslett-Moore after his move from Regional customer to employee. This left the
field way open with new all star team ‘The All Saaz’ made up of Stephanie Coutts, Jonathon Day, David Woods,
Denise Garland, Geoff Lerwill and Russ Drewry taking the trophy. The team
featured a mix of Regional Tasting Regulars and staff from Wellington’s newest beer bar Hashigo Zake. Runners
up were the weakened “White Rino” team while ordinary time ended with a third
place three way split between ‘What made Milwaukee Famous’ ‘Show us your class
drink from a glass’ and ‘The Eunuchs of Bitterness’. Extra time commenced with
a final tie breaker beer being served up, however after 3 rounds of questions
the three teams were still tied. This meant that Geoff Griggs had to resort to
the SOBA Member penalty shootout where the team with the most SOBA Members in
it would take the third place prize, when the tally was complete it was the
‘The Eunuchs of Bitterness’ who prevailed. The night was a huge success and a
lot of fun. Start your training for next year!
