The 2010 Emerson’S Beer Options

On November 25th for the 13th time a bumper crowd filled Firth Hall to compete against each other matching their beer knowledge and sensory abilities in what has come to be known as the Beautiful Contest of beer! This year we had a healthy 18 teams vying for the brand new Emerson’s Beer Option’s Trophy, some very desirable prizes including Emersons beer from the Regional Cellar, t-shirts, flagons and bar tabs at Hashigo Zake and for the Gisborne Gold Best Name Award. This year we had a mixture of experienced and seasoned teams along with some brand new ones.

For the second year running the referee duties were jointly held by Geoff Griggs and myself. We selected and presented 6 interesting beers blind and then asked 3 questions on each.

The field was pretty tight for the first half with last years champions The All Saaz, twice former champions White Rino and a new team of old pros The Number Ones leading the pack. At half time The Number Ones were leading with The All Saaz and White Rino nipping at their heals. The Number Ones however didn’t have the stamina to finish the game and fell away leading up to a nail biting finish where everything hanged on the last double pointer question. At the final hurdle The All Saaz were in first place by a one point margin over White Rino and The Chris Lowrie Experience in 3rd. The question concerned the IBU level of Yeastie Boys Her Majesty and was obviously a tough one if the number of incorrect answers was anything to go by. The All Saaz got it wrong, but so did White Rino, The Chris Lowrie Experience got it right bringing them to a tie for second place. This meant that the All Saaz had secured a second inscription of their name on the trophy. Extra Time commenced with the first tie breaker question failing to divide the teams as they both got it wrong. However the second tie break saw White Rino pull ahead to pick up their second, second place after being toppled from the winners podium last year. This year the All Saaz were made up of Stephanie Coutts, Jonathon Day, David Woods, Dale Cooper and Geoff Lerwill. The Moose Head Award (read wooden spoon) went to An Abundance of Residual Briefs who were made up of staff from Newtown’s Peoples Coffee and they were thrilled with their Moosehead sun umbrella. The Gisborne Gold best name award was awarded to Worts and All. Cheers to everyone who came along and competed and to everyone who has come along to the beer tasting program this year. I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
