Who would think that the producers of Hendrick’s Gin would be proud to boast that their gin is preferred by 1 out of 1,000 gin drinkers? William Grant & Sons who distil Hendrick’s in Ayrshire, Scotland say “it’s fine by us, as it’s not easy to make!” For starters, Hendrick’s is made to a special recipe which not only includes the traditional botanicals, such as juniper, coriander and citrus peel, but it also unexpectedly has Bulgarian Rose petals and cucumber. These ingredients are not boiled as is the norm, but ‘bathed’ in vapours, using one of only four remaining Carter-Head stills operating in the world. The gin is truly small-batch and hand-crafted and iconoclastic. The Hendrick’s distillers state: “It is not for everyone”, yet it has a tight and devoted following of gin drinkers who prefer something different and unusual. Supporting the quality, The Wall Street Journal rated it “The Best Gin in the World” and the “most flavourful”. The presentation is individual too. Hendrick’s comes in a heavy, truncated dark bottle as used by apothecaries of old who extracted essences and botanical tonics to cure diseases and redeem healthfulness. Maybe those in the Hendrick’s cult know something we don’t?
