1987 Whisky - 24 Years Of Tears

By Anto Coates

There's a bit of a hole in the current TV ads for Steinlager (at least for wine and whisky lovers like me). The ads depict a guy watching the All Blacks cruise to victory in 1987 (only the year is mentioned, since their major competitor owns the rights to the rugby tournament alluded to) and vowing to save his unopened white Steinlager can until 'next time'. The ad shows him dusting the can off at subsequent world cups, but as we all know, there hasn't been a 'next time' and the ad ends with him hopefully trotting off to Eden Park to 'unconditionally' support his team, consistent with the brand values of the product he's advertising. The real hole in the story is that the beer is long past being remotely drinkable and his celebratory can is likely to be near-fatal if and when he cracks it open on 23 October.

One thing that will be well and truly drinkable in 2011 though is a 1987 Milford Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky. We've just recently got a small allocation of these precious bottles and any whisky lover planning to host a World Cup final party would be remiss not to have one on hand to crack open at full time.

The Willowbank Distillery in Dunedin where the whisky hails from is now defunct and most of its stock was sold off in 2000. But some, including the seven barrels of this 1987, were bought by Australian businessman Greg Ramsay and have been re-released to coincide with the 2011 tournament. Get some while the getting's good....it will no doubt appreciate in value if the All Black's lose so it's a win-win, or a lose-win, depending on how you look at it...
