Ghost Malts At Regional

There's something special about a ghost distillery. Tasting a whisky from a long closed distillery which will never be produced again. Like a Port Ellen, Brora or Dallas Dhu. These whiskies become more rare and more collectable as time goes on. Where stock still exists the bottlings become older and more expensive, so better be in quick.

We do have an interesting range of single malt scotch whiskies from closed distilleries. Check them out:

Port Ellen from the Isle of Islay closed in 1983. These are oily, smokey and huge.
Port Ellen 1982 bottled 2001 by Gordon and McPhail at 40%. This has been in the glass bottle for over a decade!

Brora from the Northern Highlands closed in 1983. This is a cult whisky, a smokey dry highland.

Brora 25 year old official bottling at 56.3% Cask strength!
Brora 1982 bottled 2006 by Gordon and McPhail at 43%. Nice for G&M to bottle a little higher.

Pittyvaich (say Pittyvaye) from Speyside was built in 1975 closed in 1993. A brief and collectable malt.
Pittyvaich 16 year old 1990 Old Malt Cask refill hogshead 3886 at 50%. I tried this at dramfest 09, cheesy, earthy, cornflakes, raisins, good length, musky milky bars.

Dallas Dhu from speyside was turned into a whisky museum after closing in 1983.
Dallas Dhu 26 year old rum finish bottled by Cheiftains at 48.3%. At young ages it was soft and fruity, creaming sodas and pizzas. It also has a great reputation for aging well.

Tamnavulin from Speyside closed in 1996 and are well sought after.
Tamnavulin Sillman's Dram 28 years old at 45%. We tried this back in Oct 2009 and found it like chocolate smokey apples, liquorice, rum and oaky.

The gentle Lowland style is not so in demand around the world so the closing Lowland distilleries make quite a collectable niche.Littlemill 19 year old hogshead 1984 bottled by Dun Bheagan at 46%. Littlemill closed in 1984.
Saint Magdelene 1982 26 year old from butt 4712 Old Malt Cask at 50%. St Magdelene closed in 1983.I tried this at Dramfest 09 and it was floral, woody but light, musty wax, big tannins, tomato and basil.

Let us not forget the Willowbank distillery which closed in Dunedin in 1997. Stock of this is maturing well in Oamaru and being bottled as Milford. The cask strength single barrel bottlings are the ones to get. Particularly the last vintages. We have the 10 yo, 18 yo and 20yo but of most interest are the:Milford 1990 Cask Strength 58.4% 18 yo Americal Barrel 89. We tried this in July 2010 and found embers, violets, furniture polish, dark chocolate, honey, cinnamon, apple crumble, beer, grass, quinine, and lingering smoke. Also of note the new release of Milford 1993 cask strength at 52.8%. Great buying at $112.
