No Laggin' For Finlaggan

There's only one thing a Scotsman likes better than a single malt and that's a cheap single malt, so Regional set out to find the best cheap malt in the store. As always, we're firm believers that there's wisdom in a group, so our decision was formed via consensus rather than the opinion of one expert.

It's rare to find a more compelling consensus than this week's one: Finlaggan is the best under-$60 whisky in the store, as voted by two separate 30-person tastings on two separate evenings. Both groups voted it top during a blind taste testing of line ups that included Chivas Regal 12yo and the much-vaunted Ardbeg Private Stock. It was a fairly level playing field with all the whiskies coming in at around 40% alcohol but in the end the two single malts rose to the top, displaying complexity and concentration not evident in the blends. By popular demand there is a third tasting of these whiskies on June 30th -- so if you're looking to get into whisky but don't want to empty your sporran, give Ian a ring on 04 385 6952. Be quick -- this will sell out faster than a garage band with a record deal.
