The medal winners from this year’s national wine competition have just
been released. For the first time ever,
over 100 golds were awarded, a record 102 gold medas across 14 varietals and
classes. In 2008, 91 gold medals were
awarded. Pinot Noir was the most awarded
variety with 19 golds, followed by Chardonnay with 18 and Sauvignon with 13
golds, reflecting the strength and size of these classes.
The Air N.Z. Wine Awards, organized by N.Z. Winegrowers is arguably the
most influential judging in this country, and provides considerable feedback to
our wine industry on its performance; it is a tool that promotes growth in the
very important overseas markets; it provides the New Zealand wine consumer with a
creditable guide to some of this country’s top wines. Environmental issues are a focus of the wine
judging and there are significant awards for top ‘sustainable’ wines.
The full gold, silver and bronze medal results can be seen on
www.airnzwineawards.co.nz and the trophy winning wines will be announced at the
Awards dinner to be held in Christchurch
on Saturday 21 November.
Regional Wines & Spirits will be conducting a tasting of as many of
the trophy winners that are available, on Saturday 5 December, 1.00 pm to 3.00
pm, in the Upstairs Tasting Room. Cost
to attend is $35.00 pp, and places will be limited to 30. Wine judging personnel will be on hand to
discuss and explain the wine judging process.
