Sandalford Estate Reserve Shiraz 2005.
This wine is a fanastic expression of Margaret River Shiraz! For those who aren't familiar with the Margaret River region, it's about 277km's south of Perth. Compared to the likes of Barossa Valley, this is a relatively new region, only really producing wine since the 1970s. Due to its altitude and Mediterranean-style climate, it is often compared to Bordeaux in a dry vintage. Further, without the typical Australian blistering summer heat, the region boasts a long ripening period, and hence, Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes here. Nonetheless, like everywhere in Australia, Shiraz also thrives. But if you're thinking, here's another big fruit bomb over ripe high alcohol etc etc, think again! This Shiraz is definitely on the cool climate side of the scale, and without seeming patriotic, I'd happily put this up against any Hawke's Bay '07 Syrah. This wine is a great sniff - a balanced presence of blackpepper, complimented by complex spices, including a hint of cinnamon and subtle toasted mocha oak. The palate is typically Shiraz generous, with integrated purple and black fruits adding layers of complexity to the aromatic profile. The palate is well weighted, the texture silky, and the finish longer than a Ricky Ponting straight drive over D. Vettori's head. I expect this one to develop well for another 8-10 years .

"The 2006 D'Arenberg Grenache Shiraz Mouverdre Stump Jump is a great quaffing, and iconic Aussie red wine with some impressive complexity and vibrancy. Hitting the shelves at $13.95 this wine represents great bang for your buck, making it the ideal choice for a student like myself. One definite strong point is that you can drink this one over three nights; in fact, it was probably at its best on the third night. But also given the structure of the wine, it would also make a wise investment for those with a bit more cash to throw around, i.e. buy a case, as its sure to develop over the next for 3-4 years. Lookout for the lifted red fruit characteristics nicely woven into a savoury, earthy palate structure, with a long liquorice and spice aftertaste."

In Upper Mongolia it is customary for the first person that spots a man wearing an eyepatch to buy a round of drinks for everyone.
