Chateau De Pez 2004 - Good Traditional Claret

Only the lucky few can now enjoy the latest and greatest clarets, the red wines of Bordeaux. The demand for the very best and exorbitant prices for many of the wines is such that mere mortal wine lovers find it difficult to access and enjoy the wines. That’s why we conduct tastings of these wines at Regional, so we can share the cost and experience a range of them. A disconcerting development has also been seen in claret over the last two decades. Many Bordeaux producers are making wines that appeal to the international drinker – modern, spotlessly clean, ultra-ripe and oaky – wines that could come from any of several grape growing regions of the world!
So much for the notion of terroir and reflecting the origin….. Our buyer, David Conway, has come across a small stash of good claret, the way it used to be and should be nowadays. 2004 Chateau de Pez from the northern Haut-Medoc commune of St Estephe. This property, owned by the Louis Roederer Champagne house, covers 26 hectares planted to 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine is aged 18 months in 40% new oak barrels.
The 2004 vintage wines are now seen as classical Englishmen’s wines, sufficiently ripe with elegance and the structure to enable accessible drinking with the ability to keep some time. They are not expensive; in fact bargains, when looking at every vintage since. The wines of St Estephe have been long-loved for their robust and slightly rustic nature – a reflection of the heavier clay-influenced soils compared to the finesse-endowing gravels of Pauillac and St Julien.
They are hearty and eminently food friendly. Roasted meats are perfect with these wines. This 2004 Chateau de Pez is full-bodied, with savoury game and dark red berry flavours, touched with a little funky leather and earth, rounded in tannin structure, and a succulent drink that shows why it is rated a Cru Bourgeois Exceptional. Essentially, this is good, old-fashioned (in the best way), traditional claret. Hard to find and a bargain too. Only 25 cases were imported.
