It is fantastic to see Villa Maria’s
‘Cellar Selection’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2007 top the
latest issue (No. 135, July, 2009) of Cuisine’s tasting of New Zealand
Syrah. This wine took gold and won the
Champion Syrah trophy at the Royal
Easter Show Wine Awards earlier this year and this top rating in Cuisine
endorses the strides that the Villa Maria Estates group has made with the variety based on its Gimblett Gravels vineyard
fruit sources. Villa Maria’s success in Cuisine was backed up by the Number 2 rated wine, Villa Maria Reserve Hawke’s
Bay Syrah 2007 (due instore in the
next few days). Sister labels Vidal and Esk Valley
have also shown consistent gold medal and trophy winning form with Syrah over the last few years too, and this must mean that the Villa Maria Estates group figures among this
country’s leaders with this exciting red variety.
Villa Maria ‘Cellar
Selection’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2007
Described by the
Cuisine judges as “complete”. “Its poise, balance and lengthy finish
appealed to the head, the riot of dark seductive spice, blueberry and
barnyard complexity took care of the
heart…..with multidimensional charms” reports Cuisine.
Villa Maria ‘Reserve’
Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2007
Made in a more serious and ageworthy style
than the ‘Cellar Selection’ labels,
Villa Maria’s ‘Reserve’ labels often suffer from seeming less accessible and
drinkable than it’s lower priced siblings. The truth is that the Reserve wines show more constitution and
complexity, but often need more time to show it. Cuisine says “Its
spectacular aromatics, and flavours of five spice and dried herbs, were much
admired. It is built to last…”
Australian Shiraz Result
On
a side note, it was good to see the Domaine Chandon ‘Heathcote’ Shiraz 2006 that we featured on our previous ‘Grapevine’
newsletter come through in Number 2 spot with 5 Stars in the
tasting of Australian Shiraz in the
same issue.
