Four Quarter Finals - Anto's Picks On What To Drink

by Anto Coates

After this weekend, some serious rugby powerhouses will be heading back from whence they came. Here are my beverage picks to send them off in style:

The Wellington lot:

Ireland:
Where would an Irish game be without Guinness or Kilkenny? For those who feel like something a little stronger try our Jamesons 18yo or if you're into mixing go for the Bushmills or the regular Jamesons Irish.

Wales:
Surprisingly under-represented in our shop (which means they are probably going to lose this weekend). We do have a bottle of the Penderyn whisky though if you're quick...

South Africa:
What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? We've got some brand new wines in store just in time for South Africa's titanic clash against Australia. Since the weather is supposed to come right this weekend try some of our really good value Chenin Blancs, like the Badenhorst, the Vinum or the legendary Ken Forrester. Or if you're firing up the Braai try one of their great pinotages, like Kaapzicht or Steytler. Or sub in the greatest pinotage ever made in New Zealand, the Kidnapper Cliffs 2009.

Australia:
There's some excellent Aussie stuff here, though my picks would be the Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier (outstanding wine for the money) and the Langmeil Valley Floor Shiraz. Any Aussies reading this should note our awesome price on the Rockford Basket Press Shiraz too...shhhh...don't tell anyone. Beer lovers should try Little Creatures or anything from the Coopers range. And if you must, go for a Bundaberg OP Rum. I would say 'drink responsibly' but the act itself is pretty irresponsible.

The Auckland Lot:

England:

The English beer selection is pretty good at Regional but my favourites are the Youngs Special London Ale and the Old Speckled Hen. Or if you feel like a good malt now that the Scots have gone home, try the English St George Malt Chapter 6.

France:
These guys have drinking down but sadly their rugby isn't quite so flash this time round. My favourite reds on a budget are the Guigal Cotes du Rhone and the Sauvageonne Cuvee le Ruffe. But if the French do pull off an upset, you'll need to have a bottle of Taittinger or Veuve on hand.

Argentina:
We have a great range of Argentinian wines to suit all budgets for anyone wanting to toast the Argies last game (OK that's brash but a loss to them will be a new low for us...)

New Zealand:
Too many to list, but my favourite whites at the minute are Auntsfield (Sauv and Chard), Charles Wiffen and Greystone Riesling. As for classy reds I'd go the Peregrine Pinot Noir, Kidnapper Cliffs Cabernet Sauvignon and the Esk Valley Winemakers Syrah...

Now if only those Italians were still in the tournament....

DAVID

Easter weekend I flew up to Auckland and had a great time visiting family. I made sure I went to Maison Vauron, a must if you enjoy French wines and also Galbraiths to try a few craft beers.

RICHARD

Roast Chicken for dinner evidently. Which Kumeu River Chardy shall I choose?
