The medal
results for the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2010 have been released. Of the 1517 wines entered by 276 wineries for
judging, 102 (5.7%) were awarded gold, 222 (14.6%) silver medals and 551
(36.3%) bronzes. This is the highest
number of gold medals awarded at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards and is
indicative of the increasing quality of our wines as well as the growing number
of wine producers.
Of the
gold medals, 19 were awarded to Sauvignon Blanc, all from the 2009 vintage,
from Marlborough
bar one. There were 15 gold medal Chardonnays
and 16 gold medal Pinot Noirs, of which 10 came from Central
Otago. There were 10 golds
awarded to Riesling, and it was pleasing to see 10 golds awarded to Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot and blends of, all from the successful 2008 and 2007 vintages
in Hawke’s Bay. The up-and-coming Syrah
variety was awarded 8 gold medal, all bar one from Hawke’s Bay fruit.
It was
a fest for the Villa Maria group, who scooped 16 of the golds, twice as much as
the next successful exhibitors, Saint Clair garnering 8 golds and the
Pernod-Ricard group which won 7 gold medal awards. Villa Maria has been consistently the most
successful wine judging exhibitor for around two decades, and this is an
enormous endorsement of the quality of the wines. Villa Maria’s winning wines are not only the
special ‘Single Vineyard’ and ‘Reserve’ designations, but also from the
affordable ‘Cellar Selection’ and value ‘Private Bin’ ranges, which is a
remarkable feat.

Wines is conducting an instore tasting of a selection of gold medal winners
from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm on Saturday 10 April.
