New Martinborough Pinot Noir Tops Bragato Wine Awards

A relatively unknown label has taken out the top award at this year’s Romeo Bragato Wine Awards, the judging which rewards excellence in grape growing. The Cobblestone Te Muna Pinot Noir 2009, grown by Saul Levine of Cobblestone vineyard in Martinborough, took the trophy for Champion Wine of the Show, along with the Mike Wolter Memorial Trophy for Champion Pinot Noir...More...

Beer Vs Wine - The Tussle For The Table

To say that the crowd at the Beervana dinner was slightly partisan is like saying Tiger Woods was slightly promiscuous. There was a heavy bias towards beer and some tables kept it in check rather better than others. Personally, I was intrigued to see how the beers would fare against the wine with food, as I’ve always thought beer is better suited to hot days, salty snacks and spicy ethnic food than to the delicate flavours and textures of fine dining. Sacred Hill – The New Releases

On Monday I was fortunate enough to try the latest release of Sacred Hill wines: the Sauvage, the Rifleman’s Chardonnay, the Brokenstone Merlot and the Deerstalker’s Syrah (no Helmsman this time due to vintage conditions). The wines were served with appropriately delicious finger foods at Zibibbo. More...

Welly On A Plate - Duke Carvell's Ali Baba Burger

Her soup was both delicious and prompt in equal measure, and served with a stack of crispy toasted bread. The soup somehow mimicked her own mother’s cooking style, in what is the best example of “just like Mum used to make” cooking I’ve seen, because it genuinely tasted like her mother had made it. More...

Felton Road - The Road Less Traveled

Felton Road’s reputation needs no elucidation here. What strikes me personally about the wines is the way they seem to be indefinably more than the sum of their parts. They are always immaculately put together, a feat in itself considering they’re made using notoriously temperamental wild ferments. Whatever the risks of indigenous yeasts may be, Felton Road wines are proof that the rewards are equally great.More...

Cuisine Restaurant Awards - A Fine Time To Dine In Wellington

Happy As A Hippo - Wellington On A Plate

The Museum Hotel has a lot of character and a rich history. The owner Chris Parkin is a keen motorcyclist and has some beautiful bikes on display in reception (with notes indicating that he takes them out for a spin occasionally too). Hippopotamus is up the lift on Level 3 and its dining room basks in the midday sun, to such an extent that our host Timothy kindly offered to lower the blinds slightly for us. More...

One of the very first events of ‘Wellington on a Plate’ 2010 was the Evening of Organic Fine Dining and Wine at The Ambeli, on Saturday 14 August. Here, Shaebodine Moleta and his team at The Ambeli hosted a dinner with organic produce matched to the organic wines. It was a special occasion...More...
