*BURGE SHIRAZ MESHACH 03*

Burge Shiraz Meshach 03

$123.55 750 MLS
2003 Grant Burge ‘Meshach’ (19.0+/20) Black red, this was incredibly rich and ripe, with a slightly volatile lift, but heck, the sheer power and richness of the wine meant forgiveness came easily. Magnificent and over-the-top, but that’s what an icon wine should be in with Aussie Shiraz. RC Aug 08

Among Australian wine aficionados, Grant Burge’s ‘Meshach’ Shiraz is one of the biggies. Its track record merits an ‘Outstanding’ rating on Langton’s Classification of Australian wine, and sits with the likes of Clarendon Hills ‘Astralis’, Henschke ‘Mt Edelstone’, Jim Barry ‘The Armagh’ and ‘Yalumba ‘The Octavius’. Meshach is a big wine in reputation and sheer depth of flavour. Its astounding concentration comes from the low yielding century old vines from the famous ‘Filsell’ vineyard on the warm Barossa Valley floor. So powerful is the fruit that it can manage 22 months maturation in 75% new oak, of which 85% is American barrels. The flavours are of white pepper, earth and leaf, with complex plum and mocha at the core, giving a Christmas cake richness. Winemaker Grant Burge rates the 2003 wine: "This is right up there with the finest Meshach releases we have yet delivered. It is a remarkably powerful wine, intense, rich and the very epitome of the Meshach style – a wine of great balance and structure – a hallmark Meshach in every way.” It will make a brilliant foil to the 2002 wine which is already destined for greatness.
