Craggy Range Pinot Noir Te Muna 09

$40.50 750 MLS
Craggy Range ‘Te Muna Road’ Pinot Noir 2008 (19.0-/20), at 13.7% alc, from Te Muna Road fruit, 5% whole bunch, indigenous yeasts, 10 months in 33% new French oak. Dar, deep ruby red with purple and black hues. This had a fulsome and broad nose with great depth of dark berry and plum aromas, rich and with complexing herb-earth notes. Full-bodied, rich and sweetly fruited with flavours of dark cherries and plums, subtly supported by oak spice, this was firmly constructed. Slight alcohol warmth and fresh acidity were noticeable, and the wine finished with great length. A wine that will keep 6-8 years plus.  RC July 10

Craggy Range ‘Te Muna’ Martinborough Pinot Noir 2008 (19.0-/20) was 13.7% alc, had 5% whole bunch, native yeast fermented and aged 10 months in 33% new French oak. Deep ruby red in colour with purple hues, this had a fabulous full nose of dark fruits, herbs, game, savoury spices all ripely and sweetly expressed. The palate was one of balance, harmony and integration. Richly concentrated, but supple and drinkable now. This will age 6-8 years.  RC Feb 10

Full, deep, dark ruby red with purple hues to the colour. This wines has a superb clarity and purity of bouquet. The aromas of dark berry fruits and plums, fresh and tightly bound still, with a minerally edge and some new oak lift. This is a wine of substance and serious construction, but the tannins are well-covered by the luscious, sweet cherry-berry and boysenberry nuanced fruit flavours. In the final analysis, this has refinement, power and youth on its side. This is possibly the pick of the range of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs that are made by Adrian Baker of Craggy Range, which includes the superb ‘Calvert’ wine from Bannockburn and the ‘Otago Station’ wine from the Waitaki Valley. Made from hand-harvested fruit of which 5% was whole bunch, fermented by indigenous yeasts to 13.7% alc. then aged 10 months in 33% new French barriques. It shows the true Martinborough fruit identity of ripe, complex, almost funky fruit and plenty of weight to the palate.  RC Dec 09
