Craggy Range ‘Le
Sol’ Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2007 (19.5+/20), at 14.21% alc, native yeast
fermented, the wine aged 20 months in 42% new French oak. Very dark, deep, purple-ruby red in colour,
this had a very full and powerful nose of very ripe black fruits with subtle
complexing spice, earth and herb notes, along with shiny oak, beginning to
harmonise and integrate superbly. A
full, powerful and substantial wine in density, richness and flavour interest,
the plump black fruits complemented by spice and tar notes are framed within a
robust structure. This has grown in
complexity over the last year.
Magnificent, and cellarable for another two decades. RC June 10
Craggy Range ‘Le Sol’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah
2007 (19.5/20), with 14.21% alc, native yeast
fermented and aged 20 months in 42% new French oak. Dark, deep, black red in colour, this has all
the Syrah attributes of black and blue fruits, black pepper, spices and florals
on bouquet. Intense, yet refined and
classy. On the palate, this is a
concentrated and fully structured wine, the extract serious, but with great
finesse. The fruit is rich, vibrant and
powerful; dark fruits, pepper and perfumed, liquorice and meat. Wonderfully fresh with its acidity giving a
lusciousness. Very long finishing
indeed. Magnificent and capable of 20
years aging. RC Feb 10
The Craggy Range ‘Le Sol’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2007 (18.0/20) 14.21% alc, spent 20 months in 42% new French oak. ‘Le Sol’ takes its name from the soil. Dark in colour, this wine exhibited more earthy, plums, pepper and black cherry with tar and some floral on the nose, which carried on through to the palate. The palate was intense, complex and concentrated but still in a tight youthful way. Not a blockbuster as the first releases of this label, and more medium body weight. A wine needing time to show its true potential. SD/RC June 09
Our deepest, darkest Le Sol yet. Opaque core, with irridescent rim. The earth, fruits and florals all get expression here; scorched earth, dark plum, aniseed, thyme and lavender marry for an incredibly intense and complex bouquet. The palate is multi-layered with dry granite-like tannins, tempered by succulent ripe fruit and integrated oak notes. Almost blueberry pie richness but with the cut of structural acid and tannin. Our best yet.
