Drouhin Montrachet ‘Marquis de Laguiche’ 2007 (19.5/20), at 13.5% alc, from 2.06 ha owned by the Marquis de Laguiche of a total 8.0 ha, aged 15-18 months in oak, none new. Very even pale straw yellow in colour, this possessed a very subtle, understated fruit expressed bouquet that was obviously brooding with minerally fruits, nuts and enormous oak presence. Amazingly steely, cutting and with an intriguing purity of flavour that seemed rather reticent, the richness and structure was manifest in texture and weight. The wine has an undeniable succulence, but this was checked by sheer power and alcohol. Layers of nuanced complex nut, stonefruit and oak notes emerge with air time. This will evolve over the next 10-15 years.  RC June 10
