Escarpment Pinot Noir Pahi 08

Escarpment Vineyard ‘Pahi’ Pinot Noir 2008 (18.5+/20), at 13.4% alc, from the McCreanor vineyard, Princess Street, 10/5 clone, vines 25+ y.o., indigenous yeast fermented, 12 months in 30% new French oak. Dark, deep, purple hued ruby red in colour, this had a solid, full and vibrant nose of fresh red berry fruits. Luscious, fleshy, bright and juicy on palate with plenty of cherryish fruit, this had excellent tannin grip providing balanced structure and a degree of restraint. Drink 5-7 years plus.  RC July 10

Escarpment Vineyard ‘Pahi’ Pinot Noir 2008 (18.5-/20), at 13.4% alc, fruit from the McCreanor Vineyard, Princess Street, from 25+ y.o. 10/5 vines on heavier soils. The wine had 20 days vat time and spent 12 months in 30% new French oak. Brilliant purple ruby in colour, this had very fine, deep and dense aromas of dark cherries and dried herb nuances. Full, rich, sweetly ripe and with complexing savoury fruit flavours, this had very fine extraction and grip adding a firmness to the mouthfeel. The ‘Pahi’ was formerly labelled ‘Voyager’, and this site is seen by Larry to provide wines with a big volume of fruit in typical New Zealand fashion.  RC March 10
