Kerner Estate Marlborough Pinot Blanc 2007 (17.0+/20), at 13.0% alc, from 12 y.o. vines, light
straw yellow in colour, with a fresh and full yellow stonefruit nose showing
some nutty notes from SO2. Dry to taste,
this was crisp and clean, with gentle, ‘accurate’ Pinot Blanc stonefruit
flavours and good racy acidity. Again
some SO2
showing. This will keep well. This wine was made by Mike Weersing. RC Apr 10
Joanne and Bruce Kerner run a boutique vineyard and winery operation at the juncture of the Wairau and Waihopi rivers in Marlborough. Their Pinot Blanc is one of the few expressions of this popular Alsatian variety in this country and is classical in its crisp mineral and white stonefruit flavours. It is ideal as an aperitif, and has sufficient weight to accompany most fish and white meat dishes well. EP April 09
Pale straw in colour, this Marlborough Pinot Blanc delivers fresh, lifted and bright aromas of minerals, sea spray, iodine and comice pear. With air, these aromas turn floral and perfumed with notes of carnations, honeysuckle and little wild roses. After the delicate and playful bouquet, the wine is surprisingly powerful and concentrated on the palate, with great grip and focus, tasting of mineral salts, quinine, and white-fleshed plums. This is followed by good briny persistence. Overall, this wine exhibits the mineral character of Pinot Blanc with a lovely balanced structure of acid and fruit.
