Laurent-Perrier Champagne ‘Ultra Brut’ NV
Some wet-wool sulphides on nose, and the
palate showing slight grip and phenolics.
The wine is soft and a little low in acidity, coming across broader than
expected. Not the best bottling and nor
the best showing of what is normally steely, crisp and refreshing. My wine score 16.0+/20 RC Nov 07
Laurent-Perrier Champagne ‘Ultra Brut’ NV
Introduced in
1980, this was the very first ‘brut nature’ or ‘no dosage’ Champagne, and regarded as a style ideal
with food. 55% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot
Noir, from 15 crus with an average rating of 97%. Straw yellow with good depth to the
colour. Very fresh and steely on the
nose, minerals and stonefruit hints.
Very dry, crisp and steely on palate.
This is very fine and elegant and tightly constructed, almost knife-edge
in feel. The fruit richness counters any
suggestion of austerity. Excellent long
finish. The sheer cleanliness and
finesse allied to the dryness is wonderful.
