A really good and subtle Australian Cabernet/Merlot of a calibre and style to cellar, in preparation for future comparative tastings of the 2005 fine Bordeaux and Hawke’s Bay blends. Unlike most Australian reds in this category, 2005 Peter Lehmann Cabernet Sauvignon Mentor is not heavy, it does not shriek of oak or eucalyptus, and is generally a revelation. Cellar 10 – 25 years.  GK June 10

Peter Lehmann ‘Mentor’ 2005 (19.0-20), at 14.0% alc, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fruit from vines, some over 60 y.o., aged 18 months in all new French oak hogsheads. Very deep and full ruby red in colour, this had a very powerful nose with beautifully ripened blackcurranty varietal aromas, rich with cassis liqueur notes, very fine oak lift. This smells of Bordeaux! Firm, concentrated and deeply flavoured, yet with a linear elegance to the structure from fine-grained and tight tannins, this had a rich cassis and mint nuanced flavour profile, matched by oak cedar and spices, and excellent acidity. A wine to keep 10-15 years.  RC May 10
