This rarely seen limited release wine from Number 1 Family Estate in Marlborough must be one of this country's best-kept secrets.  It certainly can sit among the top echelon of New Zealand sparkling wines and has a genuine Champagne-like personality.  This is easily understood once it is known that Daniel Le Brun has created the wine.  He is the most experienced sparkling winemaker in the country with family roots in the Champagne region in France.  This is 80% Pinot Noir with 20% Chardonnay, fermented to 12.5% alc.  The wine has elegance along with depth and concentration.  The textures are exceptionally fine.  The residual sugar is only 6 g/l, but the richness is quite astounding.  Even more startling is the yeast autolysis and its complexity of bready-yeasty characters.  Four years on lees has provided this interest.  A superb sparkling wine.  RC Dec 09
