OBSIDIAN CAB/MERL 08

Obsidian Cab/Merl 08

$46.55 750 MLS
Strangely closed the night we tried it, though its pedigree and the great 08 vintage were evident on the palate. A more vibrant fruit expression than the 07, through a bramble and blackberry palate to a balanced finish with enough acid to suggest this will really perform in the cellar. 19.0-/20 AC July 10

The Obsidian 2008 (19.0-/20), at 14.0% alc, 38% CS, 30% Me, 14% CF, 12% PV and 6% Ma. Very dark, deep, ruby red with purple hues, this had a restrained bouquet of cassis, liquorice and dark fruits, lifted by a floral note. On palate, there was richness, depth and concentration of red and black berry fruits framed within a classically structured extraction and good fresh acidity. This is a superbly defined wine with very good length, albeit somewhat closed at present. It should develop well over the next decade.  RC July 10
