Palliser Estate Martinborough Pinot Noir 2008 (19.0-/20), dark ruby red, full, rich, lush and
fleshy, the dark savoury berry characters showing interest and complexity. The acid freshness was a feature. Excellent, soft extract. 4-6+ years easily. RC Sept 10
Palliser Estate Pinot Noir 2008 (18.5-/20), at 14.2% alc, from 10/5 and Dijon clones 115, 777 and
667, aged 12 months in French barriques.
This had a brilliant medium-deep ruby red colour with a fresh, brash
nose of ripe, peppery dark cherry fruits, still youthful and raw. On palate, this had bright, rich dark berry
fruit flavours framed within a structure composed of firm tannin grip and
fresh, lively acidity. This needs
another 1-2 years to soften, then it will live another 6-8 years easily. RC July 10
A modest crop and favorable ripening weather produced fine quality grapes
with strong pinot noir flavours and good ripe phenolics. This wine is made from
a blend of our older own rooted 10/5 Pinot noir vines and newer plantings of the
Dijon clones 115, 777 and 667. The grapes were fermented in traditionally styled
open fermentation tanks. The wine was then aged in French oak casks for 12
months.
The taste is of concentrated ripe red fruits and fine grained tannins. The
tannins give texture and persistence while the berry flavours linger. It's
succulent and beautifully textured on the palate with lovely mid palate weight
and fine, supple tannins. It's youthful and well flavoured with a lingering
delicious finish. A stylish Pinot that's sure to mature gracefully.
While drinking well at release it has the concentration and structure to
reward cellaring for a year or three.
