Penfolds ‘Grange’ 2005 (19.0-/20), at 14.5% alc, a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon from Barossa, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, matured 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Very densely coloured, deep black-purple red. This was a full and open wine on bouquet, solid, dense and almost chunky in expression, full of savoury black fruits, meat, herbs and spices, aleady complex and full of interest. On palate, this was very full, lush and plump, packed with savoury, leathery, black-fruits with a herb-game amalgam, along with an almost oxidative, forest complexing note. Still, very ripe and sweet, matched to gritty, powerful tannin structure that was open and showing an accessibility. A Grange to enjoy over 25-35 years.  RC Aug 10
