Penfolds ‘RWT’ Shiraz 2005 (19.5-/20), at 14.5% alc, 100% Shiraz from the
Barossa, aged 14 months in 70% new and 30% one y.o. French oak hogsheads. Bright, dark-purple red in colour, this was
exceptionally fine featured on the nose with sweet dark fruits, oak spices,
floral and pepper nuances, all still tightly held together. Silky smooth and ultra-lush on palate, the
sweetness and richness of the black fruits was the highlight. This had density and great concentration
underneath, and lovely freshness and tension.
A wine of incredible opulence and finesse. A wine to keep 15+ years. RC Aug 10
Penfolds ‘Red
Winemaking Trial’ is the result of over a decade of research towards making a
modernistic style of Barossa Shiraz at a level that could stand alongside the
traditional Penfolds ‘Grange’. With ‘RWT’, the emphasis is on the expression of
Shiraz with
Barossa regionality, matured with new French oak, rather than American, in a
style of opulence, fully ripe sweetness and great finesse of structure. The
result is another Penfolds classic. The features of ‘RWT’ are its seductive
aromatics and silken textures. The 2005 is a massive wine of immense extract,
but in the newly created refined style as developed by the Penfolds team, and it
is highly recommended. As Peter Gago says "The RWT wine style is an excellent foil to Penfolds
Grange”.RC Dec 08
Penfolds ‘RWT’ Shiraz
2005 (19.0-/20), totally Barossa Valley fruit given 14 months in 70% new
French oak was far more elegant.and opulent with spicy, shiny, luscious fruit
and oak flavours. Very modern, but with
huge extraction, all very supple, of course!
Very fine and long on the finish. RC July 08
