REDMETAL MERLOT/FRANC 08*

Redmetal Merlot/Franc 08

$14.95 $20.95 750 MLS
The 2008 Redmetal Merlot/Franc is an absolute stunner and quite possibly the best release of this label to date. A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, this was part hand-plunged and part pumped over for extraction and maceration, then aged in barrel for 12 months. Deep ruby red in colour, the nose exudes ripe dark plum fruit aromas with classic fruit-cake notes that are reminiscent of good Bordeaux claret. Complexing cedar nuances complete the profile of the bouquet. The wine is medium weight and possesses a sweetness and fleshiness that is a result of perfectly ripened fruit. The tannin structure is supple and there is a great deal more to the wine than first impressions suggest. As is typical of the top Hawke’s Bay reds from the 2008 vintage, the aromatics are a feature, as is the sheer accessibility of the wine. Drinking exceptionally well, it will keep and develop over the next 4-6 years easily. It truly is a little cracker of a wine.  RC March 10

Redmetal is the common local name for the free-draining alluvial deposits from a prehistoric river that flowed through the area. These gravelly deposits now form the basis of the vineyard soil, encouraging the vines to work hard and pour the fruits of their labour into deeply flavoursome wines like the Merlot/Franc. The vineyard philosophy has always been to make great wines at realistic prices, and 2008 was a near-perfect red wine vintage. This Merlot/Franc shows very ripe dark fruit with soft supple tannins and complex hints of plum and dark chocolate. If you’re lucky enough to have a bottle on hand to stimulate some great conversation and wash down some medium-rare porterhouse, you’ll be about as close to happy as you’re ever likely to get.
