Sierra Cantabria Rioja ‘Coleccion Privada’ 2006 (19.0+/20), at 14.5% alc, 100% Tempranillo from vines over 50 y.o., the wine aged 18 months in new French and American oak barrels. Brilliant purple hued ruby red in colour, this had a beautifully refined nose of red berry fruits and pronounced coconutty American oak aromatics, On palate, this expressed luxury and decadence with exotic red fruits and masses of rich and sweet American oak flavours, this dominating the fruit. However, the fruit was framed by a substantially structured extraction, giving a degree of tightness. Described as being like an “exotic bazaar”, this all came together superbly.
