TE MATA AWATEA 09*

Te Mata Awatea 09

$35.55 0750 MLS
This wine is a reflection of how difficult Te Mata finds making a lesser wine in a great vintage. It’s almost embarrassingly good and will have many drying their eyes with the bill of their 2009 Bordeaux futures. Aromas of cassis, wildflowers, baked bread and blackberries continue onto the long, elegant palate with its plump tannins and fresh acid combining to a movie star finish that will last until intermission. Show me a better wine for the price and I’ll show myself the door.

Drink with: New Zealand beef and lamb – but you’ll need an extra bottle if the Evers-Swindell twins are coming round. I hear they’re prolific scullers.

The 2009 Awatea (19.5-/20) was a lighter purple red, with raspberries, baked bread and cassis. The hallmark of this wine though was the incredible focus, soft red fruit tannins and blackberries and a long finish. Astonishing value for around $30 and has 10-15 years in it easily.

Easter weekend I flew up to Auckland and had a great time visiting family. I made sure I went to Maison Vauron, a must if you enjoy French wines and also Galbraiths to try a few craft beers.

Roast Chicken for dinner evidently. Which Kumeu River Chardy shall I choose?
