Vidal Estate Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet 2008 (18.5-/20), at 13.5% alc, aged for 14 months in French and American oak barriques. Deep, purple-red, quite youthful in appearance, this had a bouquet redolent of earthy plums and tobacco, with some savoury nuances, reflecting the Merlot. Good blackcurrant elements from the Cabernet Sauvignon also came through. The palate was fir and quite robust, the tannin grip a prominent feature. But the black fruit and tobacco-like Merlot had richness, and an edge of leaf to give freshness and cut.   RC Apr 10
