Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf 07

The Michel family have14 ha of red varieties managed organically, making one of the leading examples of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  At 14.5% alc., this is 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault and others, from vines 60-100+ years old, aged in tank and foudres for 18 months before release.  Dark ruby red in colour, this has a softly reticent, but brooding nose.  The palate is also closed at present, but the warmth and richness of the red and dark berry fruits is obvious.  The wine has a rich unctuous mouthfeel and exudes great potential.  Fine tannins underscore the fruit richness.  This will develop well over the next decade and a half.  RC March 10
