VILLA MARIA MERLOT OMAHU 06

Villa Maria Merlot Omahu 06

$51.95 $55.80 750 MLS
Villa Maria ‘Single Vineyard – Omahu Gravels’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2006 (18.0-/20), at 14.0% alc, aged 18 months in 50% new French oak. Dark, deep, blackish red, quite youthful in appearance, this had an intense, but elegant nose of blackcurrants, herbs and spicy plums on nose, quite Bordeaux-like. Dry, tight, leathery, with lush blackcurrant fruit underneath, this demonstrated cooler spectrum flavours, fresh acid on a firmly gripping palate unfolding some secondary dried herb interest with breathing. A wine that will become more elegant over the next 6-9 years.  RC Sept 10

14.0% alc, fruit from the Omahu Gravels site in the Gimblett Gravels, 18 months in 50% new French barriques. Deepish ruby red colour. Very tightly bound nose with good perfumes and florals in a Margaux-like style. This is crisp and minerally-steely on palate, the floral notes giving a lift to the palate. The wine has good concentration, but the tannins and leanness create an austerity of style. This wine needs time to show its potential. 18.5/20 RC April 08

DAVID

Easter weekend I flew up to Auckland and had a great time visiting family. I made sure I went to Maison Vauron, a must if you enjoy French wines and also Galbraiths to try a few craft beers.
