I was able to see a batch of Viogniers the other day, up to $177.00 for dry ones. It therefore is a pleasure to draw attention to Villa Maria's 2007 Omahu Single Vineyard example of the grape. It shows superbly the elusive apricot fruit and citrus blossom character of the variety, plus a depth of barrel, lees-autolysis and MLF complexities which are near-perfect. Great wine – is this the best Viognier made so far in New Zealand?  GK March 09

Villa Maria ‘Single Vineyard – Omahu Gravels’ Viognier 2007 (18.5+/20) behaved as Viogniers tend to by seeming awkward and oaky on first pouring, but coming together to show seamless and rich citrus zest and apricot flavours with air time.
