A selection of the finest 20 barrels of Yalumba's red wine. Fruit mainly from the Eden Valley, 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Shiraz, fermented to 14.0% alc. Dark, deep, black-hued purple-ruby in colour. This has a beautifully oaken nose of spices and moccha that provides exotic and decadent notes to the earth and plum fruit, which is just beginning to show savoury secondary characters. Ultra elegant and smooth on palate, and certainly no block-buster, this has velvet textures, the extraction very fine-grained, but nevertheless considerable. Dried spices, leather and hins of meat and game to the dark berry and brown spiced fruit flavours. Still with good' lively acidity. This should keep another decade. 19.0-/20 RC Aug 10
Yalumba ‘The Reserve’ Cabernet/Shiraz 2001: A sort of Super-Signature, around 3,000 bottles made. Black red with purple hues, fairly deep in colour. Rich and complete on bouquet, very deep, but not showing any excesses. Gorgeously decadent oak aromas. Very high in extract, with very refined tannins. In essence a massive wine of great structure, tight and concentrated, yet one of style and class. Very youthful, this has great potential. 19.0+/20 RC May 07
Yalumba tasting note: Dense inky red in colour the nose is full of deep red fruits, spices and cloves with rich chocolates and concentrated sweet licorice all enveloped in creamy oak aromas. The palate is big and rich with sweet plummy fruit. The initial impact of plums, anise and sweetness continues to linger on and on. Like all The Reserves this is a wine built with structure and finishing with mouthfuls of long fine grained tannins.
