Small volume, high quality Sicilian red made from Nerello Mascalese, the noble indigenous red grape of Mount Etna.

This wine comes from a site at high elevation which suits this powerful, velvety red grape's growing requirements, enabling it to retain fresh high acidity to balance its deep dark fruit and savoury earthy flavours. It has a lively palate and long finish.

Benanti is one of the stellar producers in Sicily today.

Drink with game flavours; vegetarian or meat based and mature cheese. It drinks well now and can age in optimal cellar conditions for at least five to six years.

What the critics say

"In its second year now, the 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra is a slightly more fragile and subdued wine compared to its cousin from the Contrada Cavaliere. The floral impact of this wine leaves a lasting impression, and the quality of fruit veers toward wild berries and cranberries. There is a note of plush or succulent sweetness that seems very specific to this wine. The tannins are silky, and the wine is mid-weight in texture but noticeably long in persistence. This pure expression of Nerello Mascalese would pair nicely with fresh tuna and capers served with tomato sauce on pasta. Some 6,000 bottles were made."

93/100 Points, Robert Parker, Oct 2019

"A harmonious, medium-bodied red, with supple tannins and a light juiciness to the plumped cherry, black tea leaf, dried fig and smoke-tinged mineral flavors. Chewy finish."
