UNICO ZELO NERO THE RIVER 17
Unico Zelo is one of the new kids on the minimal intervention wine block in Australia with a string of interesting wines made mostly from lesser known grape varieties from warm parts of Europe.
This wine is made from the Nero d'Avola grape, the most planted red grape in Sicily where there are over 46,000 hectares of it. The grapes in this wine are growing in the sandy limestone soils at Barmera in Riverland South Australia. It's deep ruby with a juicy bit soft full body and smooth finish, balanced by Nero's hallmark of fresh acidity, which adds length.
If this wine is any indication, Nero d'Avola may well have found its feet in a new home with a similar climate to its classic Mediterranean homeland.
