The Wittmanns and their ancestors have been wine-growers in the old market town of Westhofen, in southern Rheinhessen; the first documented instance of viticulture in the family dates from 1663. Today’s estate developed from this long tradition over the course of centuries. Philipp Wittmann, his wife Eva Clüsserath-Wittmann and Philipp’s parents, Günter and Elisabeth, share the task of running their 25-hectare estate. Since 1990, the vineyards have been cultivated according to controlled ecological guidelines (the family joined the organic farmers’ association Naturland in the same year), and since 2004, biodynamically. Ecological viticulture means uncompromising abstention from the use of herbicides, chemical or synthetic fungicides or insecticides, and easily soluble mineral fertilizers. This keeps the soil healthy and ensures that the vines are deeply rooted, which in turn results in a good supply of nutrients and minerals.
