Reds

2021 Chapoutier Côtes du Rhône Rouge, France
(RRP $20.99)

As they say, “you can’t go wrong with a Côtes du Rhône'' and this is even more apt with a producer such as Chapoutier, whose family has had wine interests in the Rhône Valley since 1879.

This lively Côtes du Rhône is made as a blend of predominantly Syrah and Grenache. It is complex with appealing structure and a sumptuous velvet mouthfeel typical of the region. The wine is also sealed with a screw cap to ensure it tastes just the way it did when it was made at the winery.

Drink this versatile wine now and over the next few years with a variety of dishes ranging from roast chicken and pork to grilled and roast lamb.

2020 Mitolo Shiraz Nessus, McLaren Vale, Australia
(RRP $28.99)

The Nessus Shiraz is sourced from Mitolo's own vineyards at the southern end of McLaren Vale, close to the seaside town of Port Willunga in South Australia. Here the climate is Mediterranean with long warm days and short cool nights and the proximity to the sea means that frost is rare and, in general, conditions are excellent for grape growing.

The rich, heavy clay soils and warm summer days produce a deeply coloured, full flavoured wine with soft, silky tannins. Maturation in older oak barrels, allows the purity of Nessus to really sing.

Drink now and over the next three years with grilled and roasted red meats.

2020 Spade Oak Voysey Syrah, Gisborne, NZ
(RRP $20.99)

Spade Oak Wines was founded by winemaker Steve Voysey and his partner in wine and in life, Eileen. This Gisborne couple produce outstandingly good value wines from the most eastern wine region in this country, including this medium bodied spicy Syrah. Like all Spade Oak wines, this one over-delivers on value and on taste.

Modelled on Hermitage from the Rhône Valley in France, this is a bold wine that is complex and muscular. A small amount of Viognier has also been blended in line with the traditions of the Hermitage region. Expect rich layers of ripe red berry flavours, velvety tannins and complex, rustic aromas of savoury earthiness next to classic syrah spice and pepper.

Drink now and over the next two years with red duck, grilled meats, venison and lamb dishes.

Whites

2022 Clay Creek Vineyards California Chardonnay, Lodi, USA
(RRP $24.99)

Clay Creek Vineyards is part of a family owned winery which has been growing grapes in California since 1924 using sustainable farming practices that are central to the family's firmly held environmental beliefs.

The vineyards are predominantly located in the Lodi region of California wine country. Positioned between San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the Lodi appellation, while relatively far inland, is able to maintain a classic Mediterranean climate, featuring warm, sunny days and cool evenings.

This benevolent climate provides the ideal growing conditions for grapes to develop flavours of peachy stone fruit, apricot and tropical notes which abound in this wine and are balanced by vanilla and hazelnut notes from judicious oak use. Fresh acidity adds a lingering finish to this full bodied dry wine.
Drink now and over the next three years with white fish, roast chicken and creamy pasta dishes.

2022 Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2022, Marlborough, NZ
(RRP $21.99)

Whitehaven Wines began life in 1994 as a romantic business for a couple of corporate escapees, Sue and Greg White, who had given up life in the rat race of Auckland for another kind of life aboard their yacht. When sailing around the country, they took shelter in the Marlborough Sounds from Pacific storms and fell in love with the region. An easy thing to do when harbouring in the spectacularly pristine waters of the Sounds. They decided to settle there on terra firma once more and try their hands at wine production, hiring a winemaker and beginning a business which has now been around for 27 years.

This fresh, fruit-driven Sauvignon Blanc is dry with lively acidity, a light body and intense flavours of tropical passionfruit typical of many Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs complexed by herbaceous notes. It's the winner of a huge number of awards and represents the archetypal, well made and now quite often overlooked Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - with which you really do get bang for buck.
Drink this wine over the next two years with creamy goat’s cheese, shellfish, white fish dishes and summer salads.

2021 Monowai Chardonnay, Hawke’s Bay, NZ
(RRP $21.99)

New Zealand winemaker Emma Lowe & Chilean vineyard manager Marcelo Nunez travelled from Chile to the foothills of the Kaweka Ranges to establish their vineyard and winery. The couple selected a site on the banks of the Ngaruroro River in Crownthorpe, a cooler, higher altitude district of the Hawke's Bay. Here they live and work, hand-crafting fine wines exclusively from grapes grown on their 22ha vineyard.

This wine is 100% fermented and aged in older French oak barrels, sur lie (on the decaying yeast cells known as lees). The wine is treated to 100% malolactic fermentation - which converts malic acid into lactic acid and adds to the texture and creaminess of the wine. The wine then spends a further 10 months in barrel before being blended to tank, ready for bottling.

Drink over the next couple of years with roast chicken and mushroom risotto, and roast salmon with herby couscous salad
