2021 Chapoutier Côtes du Rhône Rouge, France

(RRP $20.99)

As they say, “you can’t go wrong with a Côtes du Rhône'' and this  is even more apt with a producer such as Chapoutier, whose family has had wine interests in the Rhône Valley since 1879.

This lively Côtes du Rhône is made as a blend of predominantly Syrah and Grenache. It is complex with appealing structure and a sumptuous velvet mouthfeel typical of the region. The wine is also sealed with a screw cap to ensure it tastes just the way it did when it was made at the winery.

Drink this versatile wine now and over the next few years with a variety of dishes ranging from roast chicken and pork to grilled and roast lamb.

2020 Mitolo Shiraz Nessus, McLaren Vale, Australia

(RRP $28.99)

The Nessus Shiraz is sourced from Mitolo's own vineyards at the southern end of McLaren Vale, close to the seaside town of Port Willunga in South Australia. Here the climate is Mediterranean with long warm days and short cool nights and the proximity to the sea means that frost is rare and, in general, conditions are excellent for grape growing.

The rich, heavy clay soils and warm summer days produce a deeply coloured, full flavoured wine with soft, silky tannins. Maturation in older oak barrels, allows the purity of Nessus to really sing.

Drink now and over the next three years with grilled and roasted red meats.

2020 Spade Oak Voysey Syrah, Gisborne, NZ

(RRP $20.99)

Spade Oak Wines was founded by winemaker Steve Voysey and his partner in wine and in life, Eileen. This Gisborne couple produce outstandingly good value wines from the most eastern wine region in this country, including this medium bodied spicy Syrah. Like all Spade Oak wines, this one over-delivers on value and on taste.

Modelled on Hermitage from the Rhône Valley in France, this is a bold wine that is complex and muscular. A small amount of Viognier has also been blended in line with the traditions of the Hermitage region. Expect rich layers of ripe red berry flavours, velvety tannins and complex, rustic aromas of savoury earthiness next to classic syrah spice and pepper.

Drink now and over the next two years with red duck, grilled meats, venison and lamb dishes.

2020 Casa Viva Carmenere, Casablanca Valley, Chile

(RRP $20.99)

Viña Casa Viva was founded in 1993 in Chile’s Casablanca Valley where a strong maritime influence and a significant difference between daytime and night time temperatures (diurnal variation) allow for a longer ripening process. The results are wines of tremendous balance between acidity and sugar levels.

This Carmenere, the grape that put Chile on the map, is beautifully fragrant with dark fruits complexed by savoury herbal, almost minty elements. The palate is lush and opulent with the silken texture we have come to expect from ripe yet balanced fruit that is grown in this region.

Drink now and over the next couple of years with meaty, earthy dishes and even a touch of spice.

2021 Elephant Hill Le Phant Rouge, Hawke’s Bay, NZ

(RRP $24.99)

Elephant Hill is an iconic winery situated on the Te Awanga coastline in Hawke’s Bay which creates a diversity of different wine styles from grapes grown on sites in the Bridge Pa Triangle, Gimblett Gravels and Te Awanga.

This cheeky little number is a proprietary estate red blend sourced mainly from the warm, inland soils of the Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels and is oozing with ripe flavours as a result. Plummy Merlot and spicy Syrah dominate the flavour profile but the wine is typically composed of up to six varieties (also including Tempranillo, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The resulting wine is generous and soft with a mixture of dark and red fruit flavours.

Drink now and over the next three years with red meat dishes, barbeque fare and pasta dishes.

2018 Bodegas Beronia Rioja Crianza,Tempranillo, Rioja, Spain

(RRP $24.99)

The most famous wine region in Spain, and rightly so, La Rioja is located south of the Cantabrian Mountains along the River Ebro, and is split into three regions; Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja.

Now owned by the renowned sherry producer Gonzalez Byass, Bodegas Beronia was founded in 1973 by a wine and food club and is now considered a benchmark Rioja house.

This wine shows a deep cherry red colour with a garnet edge and is complex on the nose, with aromas of cherry and raspberry that are complemented by herbal notes of rosemary, thyme, hints of cinnamon and tobacco. Super fresh and tantalising on the palate, it displays a plethora of flavours, with bright red and black fruits balanced  by confected notes of vanilla and black chocolate. All in all, a cracking little Rioja, full-bodied, pleasurable and with a very long finish.

Enjoy now and over the next two years with lighter grilled meats and mushroom dishes.
