Bodega Terras Gauda overlooks the gentle green countryside of Galicia in north west Spain where its vineyards are planted. Terras Gauda uses its own yeasts, selected from its vineyards. These yeasts are unique to the winery and have been patented. This is one of the reasons the TG wines are so consistent because they don’t need to rely on commercial yeasts.
Chill this wine to 12 degrees and break out your best seafood, recommends wine importer Sophie Cotter, who brings this wine into New Zealand.
Albarino is on trend globally right now and originally comes from north west Spain and the north of Portugal, where makes its fresh, zesty, dry as a bone and super flavoursome taste go particularly well with seafood. This wine comes from Terras Gauda Winery on the Spanish side of the Minho River, which separates Portugal from Spain. This region and its Portuguese counterpart over the border is the original home for the Albarino grape, known in Portugal as Alvarinho.
Full bodied, impeccably fresh and deliciously zingy dry white made from Spain's Treixadura white grape (usually used in blends) - an awesome wine to drink with seafood.
Ribeiro is a northern Spanish wine region and home to the little known but excellent quality Treixadura grape.
This wine is made from Tempranillo, Grenache, Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano grown on clay-limestone terraces from the Tertiary era, located on the slopes of Montes Obarenes and Sierra Cantabria.
After fermentation with indigenous yeasts in oak vats, the wine is Aged for 26 months, in new French oak barrels made at Muga's own cooperage. The wine is fined with fresh egg whites, bottled and then remains in cellar for at least 18 months for further ageing.
The wine is a deep black cherry colour in the glass. The nose is complex, with aromas of dark fruits and hints of cedar wood, scrub and spice.
The palate is elegant and harmonious with more red fruits than the nose with lovely integration of acid and tannin.
Food pairing This wine will go well with red meats, lamb and all types of game dishes.
Garnacha with structure and weight as well as approachable red fruit appeal and smooth mouthfeel. This lovely new wine is one of a range of great reds based on the Grenache grape grown in Sierre de Gredos, east of Madrid in Spain's hot arid interior.
The granite soils, native yeasts and French oak that go into this wine all contribute to the complexity, depth and deliciousness in this impressive Spanish red.

Bodegas Roda is completely new to New Zealand this year, 2023, and is also a fabulously modern expression of traditional Spanish grape varieties which express themselves in bold red fruit flavours here with the support structure of firm smooth tannins, spicy complex aromas and depth. The blend is 94% Tempranillo, 4% Garnacha and 2% Graciano, all grown on bush vines between 15 to 30 years of age.
Fermentation and ageing was in large French oak vats for 12 months. Stabilisation was natural with egg white used for fining.
This is a great wine from relatively youthful vines in Spanish terms. It drinks well now and has fabulous structure to age further.

'The 2020 Macan Clasico was cropped from a more generous crop. The grapes were put in a cold chamber for one night and then underwent a cold soak of three to four days, after which they inoculated the yeasts -in 2020, 25% of it was their native yeast. It fermented in stainless steel, and the elevage was 45% in new French oak, 5% new American oak barrels, 28% in second use barrel and 22% in stainless steel for one year. The bottled wine has 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.78 and 4.5 grams of acidity (tartaric). This is one of the most elegant vintages of this bottling so far. It has showy aromatics with notes of smoky bacon, a bit meaty, and the thing that surprised me the most was the velvety texture. 202,697 bottles, 1,998 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in August 2022.' Wine Advocate
Bodegas Roda produces fabulously modern expressions of traditional Spanish grape varieties which express themselves in bold red fruit flavours with the support structure of firm smooth tannins, spicy complex aromas and depth, in this case that blend is 93% Tempranillo, 4% Graciano and 3% Garnacha.
The grapes are grown on bush vines older than 30 years, mostly in Haro and its surroundings. The yields are low, which produces wines with rich concentration of flavour. The fermentation is in French oak vats equipped with temperature control, followed by a malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels for 14 months. A further ageing of 22 months in bottle enabled the wine to mature before release.
The latest innovation from the tireless Albert-Jané, of Acustic Celler, is this brilliant, attractive, and deeply satisfying red from his home farm - Mas Vilella.
The fruit harvested to produce this wine comes from the old vineyards planted around Albert's parents' family home. The soils there are extremely poor and rocky with very low yields of just 15-20 hl/ha. Giving deep and flavoursome juice but underpinned with the tell-tale bright acidity of the native Sumoll. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the balance here and the results are sublime. This beautiful wine pairs well with beef, veal, and poultry, and once you taste it, it is hard to resist. Juicy, deep and long - but above all full of joy.
Stunning full bodied red blend from Spain, made from 70% Carignan and 30% Garnacha from 60 to 80 year old vines, which were planted on stony vineyard sites at high altitude. Grapes were destemmed and macerated for 15 days. The wine was aged for 13 months in new and one year old, low toast French oak barriques. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Sappy and energetic on the palate, offering bitter cherry and blackberry flavors that show spicy back-end lift. Smooth, well-knit tannins frame the persistent finish, which features lingering mineral and floral notes."

O Luar do Sil means: “The Reflection of the Moon on the river Sil” and the vineyards are located in the steep sided valley of the Sil river. This is 100% Godello and the grapes were harvested from two plots of granite soil near the Codos de Larouco.
Grapes are harvested by hand in the middle of September using 15kg crates. After destemming, they undergo a cold maceration below 8ºc to obtain the maximum expression of fruit. They are then pressed at low pressure and racked to remove the gross lees. The must is fermented using selected yeast for 14 days at a controlled temperature in stainless steel vats. After fermentation, the wine is kept of the fine lees for 6 months to gain richness, body and aromatic power, using batonage to redistribute the fine lees, after which it is naturally clarified.
Tasting Notes - A clean, bright colour with a glycerin rim in the glass. Subtly complex on the nose with white and wild flower notes. On the palate it shows great balance between fresh, green fruit and the ripeness of fine lees. Agreeable, complex and delicate with a predominating fruit and mineral sensation.
