This grape is also known as Primitivo in Puglia, Southern Italy, and shares the same instant likeability of a big soft red for early drinking. It can hold and improve over the short to medium term; up to five years.

Sebastiani is a winery in Sonoma, founded by Italian immigrant Samuele Sebastiani in 1895, making cobblestones for San Francisco streets to save the money to build a winery. which became highly successful and remained in family hands until 2008 when Californian wine lover Bill Foley bought it to add to his large portfolio of companies.

The mysterious origins of the Zinfandel grape were uncovered in 2002 when DNA fingerprinting confirmed that Italy’s Primitivo and the slightly trickier to pronounce, Crljenak Kastelanski, an ancient Croatian variety, are genetically identical to Zinfandel. One grape, three different names and countries. And innumerable styles of different wines made from it - variety is the spice of life and of the wine lover's choice.

Also known fondly as Zin, it's one of California's most successful red grapes, which thrives in the hot dry climate and makes beautiful full bodied wines, such as this. 

The Zinfandel grape is also widely grown in southern Italy where it's known as Primitivo because it is one of the first to ripen (hence, 'primi' for first) and it is grown in eastern Europe where it's called, variously, Tribidrag,  Crljenak Kaštelanski and Kratošija. DNZ analysis has shown that the grapes known by these names are all genetically identical to the Croatian Crljenak Kaštelanski and Italian Primitivo.
