PORTUGUESE WINES

Pale, dry pink wines are all the rage right now from all over the world, and this Portuguese example is made from more than 10 different indigenous Portuguese and international grape varieties, including Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Nacional. Together these grapes provide complex red berry aromas with savoury notes of herbs and fresh lees influence from light aging prior to release.

If you're into pet nats and other funky new wave wines, then this fresh new white from Portugal will rock your wine world. It's made from five indigenous Portugueuse grapes, Azal, Arinto, Avesso, Trajadura and Loureiro, and comes in a one litre bottle, which makes it great value for money. 

The winemaker is Dirk van Niepoort, descendant and head winemaker of the well known port house, Niepoort. While this wine does fit the bill of being a 'pet nat' (petillant natural - lightly sparkling), this one comes to us at relatively low pressure with just a smidgeon of residual sugar to create a light fizz and modest alcohol of 11.5% ABV.  The wine has not been disgorged so some lees remain in the bottle. 

Serve it as is or shake it all up for a tasty, leesy complex version of vinho verde with attitude.

Where it comes from 

The grapes in Drink Me Vinho Branco are grown in two areas of Vinho Verde,  Amarante and Lousada. The vine average 25 to 30 years old and grow at between 100 to 150 metres above sea level on granite soils. All are picked by hand and fermented using wild yeasts. 

This wine is bottled with no sulphur.

The Niepoort family

The Niepoort family has been making port since 1842. The company's first property in the Douro Valley was bought in 1987 and Dirk Niepoort started a new era when he created the first Redoma red in 1991. Since then, it has acquired two properties in the D?o and Bairrada regions.

Deep juicy red from the arid dry Alentejo region in the south of Portugal, a climate that Syrah loves and adores, giving its best depths of dark fruit flavours and smooth powerful tannins. This dry Portuguese red has body to burn and rich flavours to impress with hints of dried red berries, ripe plums and even notes of stewed fruit. 

This is massively good value for money and comes from the family owned Casa Santos Lima winery.

A fresh white made from a blend of grapes produced in Portugal's Lisboa region. Fresh and aromatic with notes of tropical fruits and citrus on the nose. The palate is light with lively acidity balanced by delicately sweet accents of ripe oranges and mango.

This lovely, medium bodied red was fermented and aged in stainless steel, so it's all about the fruit flavours and old vines grown on vineyards at a relatively low altitude of 80 to 100 metres above sea level. This wine contains 2.3 grams of residual sugar per litre, which balances the firm tannins of the impressive Baga grape variety and puts it firmly in the dry camp.

Galodoro Tinto is a beautifully smooth, structured red wine made from a blend of three indigenous Portuguese grapes - Castelao, Tinta Roriz (also known as Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional with the addition of the French grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. If you're looking for a full bodied, dark red with rich black fruit flavours and spice, here's your wine. 

It comes from Lisboa in northern Portugal and ticks all the boxes from great value for money to succulently deliciously flavoursome. 

Eight months aging in French and American oak barrels makes this bold red blend a beautiful partner with cheddar or your favourite tasty cheese. It's made from Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet and Syrah, each adding powerful spicy flavour notes and deep plummy flavours, nicely balanced by bold spice and and a lingering, refreshing finish. .

The Alentejo region benefits from the warm Mediterranean climate and ripens deeply coloured red grapes such as this tasty trio.

Confidencial is a taste combination of classic native Portuguese grapes Touriga Nacional (aka queen of Portuguese reds) with the better French red grapes, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. These three powerful red grapes each adds oomph and power to this wine, providing it with a full body, dry flavours and earthy complexity. 

We think that Confidencial offers great value for money and has layers of flavours, which will improve over time in the bottle, but also drink incredibly well right now. Decant and serve in your best big wine glass. 

Portugal is the most western country in Europe and home to a diverse range of wines from crisp dry whites in the maritime north to full bodied reds from the hot south, with many delicious variations in between. 

100% Chardonnay from Vinho Regional Lisboa.

The vines are planted at a density of 4.200 Plants/ha on clay and limestone soils. The fruit is destemmed and then pressed and fremented at tempreatures around 18 degrees celcius.

With the ideal soil and climate conditions, the result is a top quality, aromatic, concentrated wine. Great diurnal variation results in ripe fruits but supporting acidity.

Our first sparkling pink Portuguese wine and it's dry, medium bodied and super zest with aromas of citrus fruits and biscuits. It is soft and refreshing with a delicate acidity that gives it a great balance.  Great match with salads and good company.

Beautiful dark juicy Portuguese red made from indigenous grapes; Touriga Nacional, Castelao, Camarate and Tinta Muida, which are grown on a combination of clay and limestone soils. 

Soft, smooth and with structure, this wine has ripe blueberry flavours, which are nicely balanced by the bold dark fruity flavours of the other three grapes in the blend. All of the grapes in this wine were fermented in temperature controlled tanks up to 30 degrees C and aged for three to four months in oak; a relatively brief time, which allows the rich fruit flavours to shine and be the hero.
