Coleraine is the flagship wine of Te Mata Estate in Hawke’s Bay and is considered by many to be New Zealand’s greatest red wine. It’s named after the home of Te Mata Estate owners John and Wendy Buck. And this wine is always a blend. Proportions vary each year. The 2018 is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.

Winemaker Phil Brodie describes 2018 as “The hottest on record since 1998, a very long growing season that delivered ripe fruit in great condition, fragrant ,complex, rich but with sapidity and tension.”

Reviews from critics resound with high praise for this vintage, such as:

98/100 from wine writer Huon Hooke of The Real Review

“Very deep, concentrated, bright purple/red colour.”

About Coleraine

The first early vintages of Coleraine and its sibling red, Awatea, were regarded as equals and from 1982 to 1988 they were both single vineyard wines, made with grapes grown on hillsides in Havelock North. They both became multi vineyard blends from 1989 onwards, using high quality grapes from other sub-regions in Hawke’s Bay, including what the Bridge Pa Triangle and Woodthorpe Terraces for the 1998 and 2000 vintages.

Hand harvested grapes are handled in separate batches to retain as many blending options later on as possible. The wine is innoculated with added wine yeasts, fermented at warm temperatures and spends approximately three weeks on skins with regular punch downs. The blend varies each year. Cabernet Sauvignon usually plays lead with Merlot and Cabernet Franc in supporting roles. The wine is aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques, approximately 70% new barrels each year.
