Unit price perHere's a Pinot Gris that tastes noticeably drier than many and is all about fresh pure, white fruit flavours of pear and peach. The refreshing acidity comes from the cooler climate grapes contained in the wine, which is made from a blend of grapes grown in three sub regions of Marlborough. The cool climate Awatere Valley has 73% with the remaining 17% from the Waihopai Valley and 10% from Kekerengu on the southern coast.
Grapes were fermented at cool temperatures to preserve fruit freshness and dry flavours.
Residual sugar is 3.8 grams, making it dry in style - and also in flavour.
The story of Astrolabe
Diversity, history and family ownership are among the reasons to try the outstanding range of wines from Astrolabe, which was founded in 1996 in Marlborough by winemaker Simon Waghorn and his partner in life and wine, Jane.
Simon has forged a reputation for being one of New Zealand's most respected producers of aromatic white wines after winning an almost embarrassingly long string of awards for his Sauvignon Blancs. He has also forged a name for adventurously diverse winemaking - he produces dry flinty whites from the most southern vineyard in Marlborough at Kekerengu on the coast about an hour's drive south of Blenheim. He is the only winemaker to produce wines from here.
He is also one of the few in this country to make Albarino, Chenin Blanc and a consistently outstanding range of wines from the organically certified hillside sloping site that is the Wrekin Vineyard in Marlborough.
The winery remains family owned and is now run by two generations, including Simon and Jane as well as their adult daughters.

Unit price perA great wine from Morrison Vineyard in Central Otago that ticks every box from being a silky textured, seductive Pinot Noir to drink now and is a keeper with its fantastic structure. New oak is kept intentionally low here with 15% adding support and smoothness while an overall 50% whole bunch fermentation adds the shoulder pads without dominating here.
Winemaker Duncan Forsyth describes Morrison Vineyard Pinot Noir as a total sleeper, a taut wine that delivers concentration and power which belies the initial impression. It is, he says, the quintessential steel fist/velvet glove.

Unit price perO2 Chenin - Chenin with oxygen, aged and oxidised in barrel for 3 years. In the spirit of the great dry Oloroso Sherry wines of Southern Spain or similar from the Jura, Portugal and beyond comes the first Central Otago version of what an aged style of wine can achieve.
Chenin, grown our Morrison vineyard, has been barrel fermented in older French oak and left aging on lees for a year. Racked and then fortified to 15% the wine is then left in barrel, 3/4's full, with air for a period of three years. Over this time it slowly develops its colour, a bright amber golden hue, and crucially also its flavours and aromas.
Aromas of lightly burnt butter & umami lead to a palate that is driven by bright acidity. Dry mineral edged nuttiness elevates these savoury flavours to a salty edged finish leaving nothing but freshness of flavour. Delicious and refreshing at the same time.
This is a wine that demands hard cheeses , salty cured meats, shellfish in their brine and piles of fresh notes and dried fruits to go with it, it will sing with matches such as these and remind you of every Mediterranean holiday you wish you had.
Drink slightly chilled
Eat with hard cheese and cured meats - or have a holiday in Spain
