Winemaking: Cabernet and Merlot grapes are vinified and aged separately in French and American oak barrels, before being finished.
Controlled extraction – 3 weeks maceration with daily pumping over

Soil: Combination of clay, limestone and gravels.
Climate: Oceanic and mild climate.
Aging: Aged in oak for 6 months.

Tasting notes: Intense and brilliant red color. Expressive nose of small black fruits (blackberry, blueberry) with delicate roasted notes (cocoa). Fruit driven on the palate, supported by present and well-integrated tannins. A long and spicy aftertaste.

Jean Louis joined his father in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at University of Connecticut and a degree in oenology at Davis. It was at that time that he completely replanted vineyards on the family’s original estate in Saint-Joseph, which had been abandoned in the early 1900’s when phylloxera hit the region.

'Vinified from grapes that were harvested as late as the 26th of September, the 2021 L'Hermitage Blanc was cropped at 38 hL/ha, above the levels of 2022. It dazzles with vivid spring blossom, honeysuckle, lemon peel, white peach, quince, apricot and discrete cedar aromas. Medium-bodied and immaculately balanced by bright acidity, this is an athletic L'Hermitage Blanc with marked freshness and energy. A saline aftertaste wraps up the sapid finish. 'The refined 2021 L'Hermitage was cropped at 37 hL/ha and bottled in early September 2023. It is laced with finely delineated orange rind, raspberry, red cherry, red plum, dried herbs, pencil shavings, black cherry, crushed violet and cedar. Showing excellent tension on the medium-bodied palate, the 2021 brings it home with clarity and freshness. From Forager wines owned by Dom Maxwell (winemaker at Greystone) comes its little siter wine Little Forager. This is 100% Pinot Noir sourced from three different sites made up of river gravels, silt loam and chalky limestone and fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts, 20% whole bunch and natural MLF.

The result is textural and generous with sweet fruit in an elegant style.

The fruit for this wine comes from a small parcel in the Byrne vineyard, located in the Conder’s Bend area of Marlborough.

The vines are managed organically and are planted on gravels that would have once been a river bed. The stoney soils provide both drainage and heat retention which are essential for this cooler site.

The grapes were hand-picked, whole-cluster pressed and taken straight to French barriques without any chemical additions. It was fermented with indigenous yeast in the barrels, helping to add complexity and texture, without dominating the nose.

The wine was left on yeast lees for fifteen months, which were stirred regularly. This meant that the yeast added both savoury notes and also served to work as a natural fining agent. After time in barrique it was gently racked then bottled without fining.

"The 2020 single vineyard, barrel fermented Chardonnay offers sophisticated soft wine with restrained flavours of grapefruit, melon and a subtle blend of nut, spicy oak and lees characters.

Barrel fermented and Barrel aged in new and older French oak add complexity and texture."

WINEMAKING

The vintage of 2023 was a challenging year climatically, very wet, and humid with low sunshine hours and periods of intense rain culminating in flooding in late January and Cyclone Gabrielle in early February.  The weather improved for the harvest months, but low sunshine hours resulted in wines with a light elegant touch, fresh, lively, and delicious in their delicacy.

Our Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are elevated hillside sites, grown on volcanic-influenced soils and exposed to cooling sea breezes. Dry grown and hand harvested before being gently whole bunch pressed, the juice is racked clear and fermented in tank with cultured yeasts, then blended, f iltered, and bottled in the winter. 

TASTING NOTE

Our 2023 Estate Sauvignon Blanc is a classically styled, wonderfully f resh aromatic wine. With clean bright aromas of snow pea and freshly chopped herbs the palate has citrus and elderflower characters, finishing with a refreshing crisp mineral purity. A fresh breezy wine that displays beautiful balance with a mineral delicacy, perfect for summer drinking.
