Site : On the Mont Battois hillside, facing Beaune, the name "Grèves" derives from the sandy and gravely soil. Separated from the Clos des Fèves by a narrow path this Chanson vineyard covers 2 hectares

The Vintage 2022 : After a winter characterized by marked variations in temperature between January and February, spring started with mild temperatures. A sequence of cold weather in April was followed by warm temperatures in May but the lack of water was very noticeable and could not be compensated by the rainy storms of June. Summer was marked by several and long heat waves and the storms of the end of August were most welcome. The harvest at Chanson started on August 30 with a team of 100 persons and ended on September 13. 2022 vintage was quite generous both in volume and quality and the red wines are generous and well-balanced with an outstanding crunchy fruit.

Tasting : Bright ruby colour. Fragrances of peony mixed with intense aromas of ripe red berries (strawberry, cherry) mixed with coffee and spicy notes. Delicate vanilla. Well-balanced and complex. Food pairing : It is perfectly matched with red meat grilled or en sauce, and all cheeses, especially the local cheeses like Epoisses or Citeaux.

VINEYARD

WINEMAKING

The wine is for the most part left alone, as the philosophy is one of “infusion rather than construction.” The wine is vinified 100% whole cluster to extract a deeper color and enhance the structure and aromatic complexity. The major condition is that the grapes must be perfect in terms of ripeness and condition. Chanson also strives to maximize the preservation of fresh fruit characteristics, which is why grapes are chilled immediately on arrival in a proprietary tunnel that provides a very quick chill with no oxygen exposure. Then, Champagne-style fractional pressing is practiced to gently extract the purest juice. Aged 17 to 19 months in barrels (30% new oak).

VINTAGE

After a winter characterized by marked variations in temperature and a summer like weather spring, A sudden and intense frost fell upon Burgundy early April and severely hit the buds that had formed on the vine. The months that followed were a succession of rainy and warm episodes. During summer there were warm and humid periods and the harvest started at Chanson on September 15, under a bright sunshine. The red wines have a good color. They give off floral fragrances and a beautiful fruit expression but the volumes produced are quite low.

TASTING NOTES

Bright ruby color. Beautiful aromas of red berries (strawberry, cherry, red-currant) mixed with pepper. Complex and well-balanced with an outstanding energy tight and deep texture. Well-integrated tannins and well-crafted oak note. Long and elegant finish with spicy notes.

Winemaker's notes...

Our Palomino is produced using the grapes from a traditional Spanish varietal planted here on Brakkuil farm back in 1978.

The vineyard at the foot of "Klein Tafelberg" (small Table Mountain) is comprised of limestone rich coastal soil - adding hugely to the Palomino's subtle notes of natural sea salt minerality.

During harvesting, the grapes are pressed and their juices inserted into tanks until primary fermentation has been successfully executed.

It is then when the veil starts its process for a couple of weeks to months. After this process the wine is transferred to French oak barrels and left for 6 to 12 months to reach maturity.

Structure and purity of blackberries, ripe currants and concentrated ripe fruit all intermingle in this beautiful Argentinian red wine. Full bodied and intense with the balance of fresh acidity and ripeness all add up to a great red wine with presence. Drink now or keep for another 9 to 10 years. This wine will last the distance. 

A rich and complete Premier Cru Pinot Noir from Volnay in Burgundy. Clos de la Barre is a Monopole (i.e. exclusively owned by Jadot). Grown in a real clos that is surrounded by high stone walls, it produces a more assertive wine than other Volnays, with ethereal spice and mineral tannins detailed amongst slightly richer, riper fruit. With serious character, this powerful and structured wine is built to improve with age. This is a superb offering from Louis Jadot.

The 2022 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru has more mineralité on the nose than some of its peers: crushed limestone filtering through the malic scents and a slight algae-like aroma. The palate is well-balanced with a keen thread of acidity, seductive orange pith and citrus notes. The 2022 has a composed and harmonious finish. This is a well-made and delicious Vaillons.

Nero d'Avola is Sicily's most popular red grape (and the island's most planted one) and is characterised by flavours of ripe black plums, intense blue fruit and licorice like aromas. It is rare to find good Nero d’Avola elsewhere but this new Australian rendition is convincingly Mediterranean like in style. Full bodied, black in colour and beautifully complex in taste.

Lush, soft and deeply aromatic aromas of rose petals, lychees and tropical fruit all vie for attention in each glass of this off dry Gew?rztraminer from Nelson - long home to many of the country's best aromatic white wines. 

A field blend of Pinot Blanc from the Bentwood Vineyard and Pinot Gris from the neighbouring Cross Hares vineyard. Picked on the same day.

Whole bunch Pinot Gris placed gently in amphora with direct press Pinot Blanc pressed atop. Fermented on skins in amphora for 6 months. The wine was then settled and blended with a puncheon of pinot blanc.

Apricot yoghurt, soft chalky tannin, crystallized ginger, peach ice tea salivating acidity.

A luscious late-harvest Sauvignon Blanc with tropical fruit, honey, and a smooth, sweet finish. Ideal for desserts or soft cheeses.

"Our Merlot Cabernet Franc comes from our Cornerstone vineyard growing in Hawke's Bays' famed Gimblett Gravels appellation. An area renowned for producing excellent hot climate reds. We think Cornerstone is the jewel in the appellation's crown but there again we are rather biased!

In our Iris blend, the Merlot sets up the palate with ripeness and structure while the Cabernet Franc brings its sweet dried basil notes to create our deliciously good medium-bodied red"
