This is a bright, bone dry Pinot Gris with an underlying salinity. The nose is zesty and layered with lemon and grapefruit notes. These flavours continue on the palate, and are met with a mineral touch and bright acidity.

Made from old vines and aged in century-old oak barrels, it is a full bodied wine with rich depth of flavour and it can take on substantial food flavours from gamey meat dishes to soft ripe cheese. 

The wine is named after the village Mittelbergheim where limestone slopes favour healthy vines.

Domaine Marcel Deiss is located in Bergheim, a small village nestling in the heart of the wine region of Alsace, equal distance from the northern and southern boundaries of the region. The current winemaker is Jean-Michel Deiss, who was born into a long-established family of wine growers, living at Bergheim since 1744.

Today he manages the domaine, which consists of 26 hectares (52 acres) of hillside vineyards spread over nine communes and approximately 20 kilometres.

All Deiss wines are certified organic, made from grapes grown biodynamically and they break new ground in style and quality. Many are field blends, made in homage to historical growing methods where many different grape varieties grew together alongside each other, were picked together and fermented together. 

Here is a surprise; a dry white co-fermented field blend of more than 12 different grape varieties, grown in Alsace, France. The varieties in this wine include Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Muscat à Petits Grains, Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner, Pinot Auxerrois, Pinot Beurot, Muscat Blanc, Rose d’Alsace and Traminer, among others.

Floral on the nose, with a hint of spice, the palate starts off on exotic fruits, giving way to lychee fruit and a slightly sweet finish, but well balanced with acid.

Full bodied, complex, dry as a bone made in a delicious modern, lively style of French Riesling with refreshing lime and green apple aromas supported by bright acidity and a waxy texture. This wine is made with grapes grown an 25 year old vines on a vineyard originally planted in the 17th Century at Rouffach in Alsace. This most eastern wine region in France was once part of Germany, hence Riesling is one of the key wines made here, and the Mure family have retained ownership of their vineyard and brand for 12 generations now. 

Classic dry Alsace Riesling. Hand picked from Riquewihr vineyards. Matured on fine lees for 4 months, no oak.  cropped to Grand Cru levels bringing superb concentration. Green apple, lime, dried pineapple, waxed honey, generous length and pleasing minerality.

This is a great wine from the home of Pinot Gris. The aroma is lively, floral and complex with notes of elderflower, citrus and green apple. The palate is rich, balanced and spicy, with crisp, pure fruit flavours.

How about a Pinot Noir from Alsace? This north eastern French wine region is home to some of the great dry aromatic white wines of the world and also, now, a growing number of impressive Pinot Noirs. 

Rene Mure is an outstanding, biodynamically certified wine producer. This wine shines a new light on European Pinot Noir, offering complexity and affordable. 

One of the world's great value sparkling wines, made the same way as champagne, often from the same grape varietiess and in France, only it is not aged for as long in the bottle. That said, the complex yeasty rich flavours and dry taste of this lovely Alsatian bubbly definitely give more than a hint of the depth of taste in a good champagne. 

Tasting Note: A special blend of Riesling, Muscat, and Pinot Blanc from gravel, clay, and limestone soils. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The Riesling gives this wine a notable acidity, keeping it vibrant and fresh with the fruitiness from all three and the floral touch the Muscat brings. Dry (less than 2g/L residual sugar.)
