One of the South Island's most powerful, full bodied, dry and rewardingly complex Chardonnays. The talented Pegasus Bay winemaking team produce this exceptional wine with its flavours of ripe citrus, honeydew melon and stone fruit (peach and nectarine). Notes of flintyness add complexity and a long finish. There are also some underlying savoury notes (toast and brioche) as a result of the secondary fermentation and lees contact in the barrel. The palate is concentrated, however, the earlier picking has resulted in a wine that remains elegant and focussed, with refreshing acidity and a lingering finish.

This is an outstanding new addition to the much loved Esk Valley stable and it successfully straddles the big buttery Chardonnay style with all the subtleties that wine fans adore about the Chardonnay grape too - namely, its crisp, freshness. 

It is part of the new Esk Valley Artisanal Collection wines, which were launched this year and this one is made from clone 95 vines in Hawke’s Bay. The grapes were fermented in French oak with wild yeasts, which gives this wine its rich and nutty flavours, its seductive savoury notes and its full body.

The finished wine went through 50% malolactic fermentation with lees stirring to accentuate and lift the big flavours in this big wine.

Bright, classy and immensely satisfying. The twelve months in barrel have only enhanced the fruity punch of pineapple, peach, and grapefruit all balanced to a fine richness that lasts on the palate.

Kumeu River Wines is New Zealand's top Chardonnay producer and best known globally. 

The winery is in the West Auckland village of Kumeu where it began life as San Marino Wines in 1944 when Croatian immigrant couple, Mick and Katé Brajkovich, bought a small property with a vineyard on it. Their descendents now own and run Kumeu River Wines, which produces 250,000 bottles of wine annually from its owns 30 hectares of vineyards in Kumeu and from another 10 hectares, owned by local grape growers. 

This wine, Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay is the flagship white from the winery. It is made from  grapes grown on six different vineyard sites in Kumeu and is consistently one of New Zealand's greatest dry, full bodied whites with outstanding freshness and complexity.

This great white drinks well now and can also age well for up to 10 years, potentially longer. 

Grapes in this Chardonnay were all grown at Te Awanga on the Hawke's Bay coast, near to Cape Kidnappers, hence the name. 

This wine was made from 70% hand picked grapes which were 70% whole bunch fermented with the remaining 30% destemmed before fermentation in a combo of French oak and stainless steel tanks. All yeasts were wild and the wine was aged in French oak puncheons, 15% new for eight months. It's a full bodied, dry Chardonnay with intense zingy acidity thanks to the cool climate the grapes were grown in.

About Greystone

The Greystone wine story began in 2000 when the Thomas Family bought an old sheep farm on the Omihi hills in the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury. The rolling limestone hills lured this family in and their goal was a single minded one: to make great wines from the limestone rich soils here. Fast forward 20 years and Greystone is one of the great (and, some might say, yet to be fully discovered) wineries in this outstanding wine region. Not least due to the work of winemaker Dom Maxwell and general manager Nick Gill, who began working together in 2005 and has grown along with the brand and quality. 

Nautilus Chardonnay is one of Marlborough’s most age worthy white wines and a delicious drink right now, especially the 2019 which comes from a great vintage in this country’s largest wine region. The Nautilus winery was founded in 1985 by the Hill-Smith family in South Australia and continues in the same ownership. Long term winemaker Clive Jones has been key in the transformation in quality and perception in Marlborough Chardonnay over the past two decades, thanks to this dry, full bodied, smooth and creamy wine, which ages beautifully (for those with willpower) for up to a decade.

Whitehaven’s single vineyard range of wines speak to the importance of terroir in creating unique, premium quality wines, and allow us to showcase outstanding, smaller parcels of fruit identified by our winemakers each vintage. Reflecting the exclusive nature of these wines, each bottle is individually numbered. ‘Fossil Block’ is the name of the vineyard block where fruit for this wine is sourced – named for the ancient Awatere river fossils found at the site.

We have used a lightweight bottle to lessen this wine’s impact on the environment.

Colour / Appearance: Pale-straw yellow.

Aroma / Bouquet: The wine possesses a unique aromatic profile, reflecting where it is grown – the essence of terroir. Lifted and refined, with floral characteristics, white stone fruit and subtle crystalline, flinty and earthy undertones.  

Palate: Concentrated yet delicate, a thread of mineral salinity, reminiscent of river stones, runs through the palate. The distinct mineral structure supports complex stone fruit and citrus flavours. Vibrant acidity carries the wine to a long, flinty finish.  

Cellaring:  Enjoy now for its freshness and purity, or cellar for 5-7 years to reveal richer, more complex flavours and a silky texture.

Food Match: The wine’s vibrant acidity and mineral backbone pair seamlessly with fresh seafood such as oysters, seared scallops or simply grilled fish. The textural depth of the palate would also compliment roasted chicken dishes, creamy risotto, or soft-ripened cheeses.

WINEMAKING NOTES

The fruit for this wine is a blend of Mendoza (42%), Clone 548 (24%), Clone 15 (21%) and Clone 95 (12%) grown on the sandy silt soils of the lower terrace of the Askerne vineyard. Hand-picked and whole bunch pressed, the juice was transferred to barrel for fermentation. The barrels were a mixture of both wild and inoculated ferments and completed 100% malolactic post ferment.  The wine was subsequently aged for 10 months with lees stirring to add volume and complexity. The final blend has a 29% new French oak component, and 15% 2nd fill.

TASTING NOTE

Sweet scented with peach, lemon and hints of tropical pineapple, layered with complex notes of coconut, honied nuts and baked fruits.  The palate has wonderful concentration with tropical and stonefruit flavours on a backbone of rich oak spice and vibrant citrus acidity giving generous length.

93 Points Wine Orbit

This is the second release of this Chardonnay, following on from a micro release in 2024. Situated on the chalky hillside of this tiny North Canterbury single vineyard, the Chardonnay vines work hard in the prevailing warm winds. Each task is performed in the vineyard with quality in mind and the work is lovingly done by hand throughout the season. Hand picked at the end of March, whilst the vines were enjoying a prolonged period of dry Autumn weather. Gently whole-bunch pressed, with the new juice going into French oak barrels for a natural fermentation over the following months. Aged for 10 months and bottled without fining.

The most flavoursome Chardonnay barrels are selected after a year of aging and then blended together to make this pinnacle of Seresin's dry, full bodied white wines, the Reserve Chardonnay. The reserve wine spends another six months in old oak puncheons, gaining depth, complexity and integration of flavour thanks to this additional maturation.

One of the greatest things about Seresin Estate is the organic certification. This came relatively early on for Seresin, who was dismayed by the amount used and the impacts of man made chemicals, which were routinely and frequently sprayed on vines. His early adopting philosophy of organic certification paved a positive path for the integrity of the wines as well as leading others to follow suit.

Sir George Fistonich's new family wine project is Cuvar; Croatian for 'the guardian', which is a good description of his role in the New Zealand wine industry. This wine is a beautiful rich and creamy Chardonnay with balance from fresh acidity that adds length and depth of flavour.
